Leap Ahead

It's time for a fresh leap in my painting! Tomorrow I leave for Chattanooga to teach a two-day workshop at Chattanooga Artworks, then Michael and I head to Huntsville AL for the Museum Gala on Saturday evening. I am excited about doing these things and excited for a fresh start this spring in my painting. Just ordered some new panels today with a more textured linen, ordered lots of big tubes of paint, and my intent is to change it up, paint more freely, and pile on the paint. I guess Leap Year is a good time to leap into new territory... this painting, done last month, is called Tulip Patterns, 24 x 12; I like the vertical format!

Subtle Color, Past and Present

Back to the white roses again (I asked Michael for some white ones for Valentines' Day)! I still really enjoy playing with pale tones on pale backgrounds -- think I'll try some stacked creamware next and then maybe some really pale skies and sand (am at the beach right now, so that's all around).

Over the past few years, I have been experimenting with pales. By nature I tend to be a colorist, and after checking out the 32 little paintings pictured in my last post, one could see the colors abounding in most of them. So the subtleties are a challenge for moi!

Looking through the 2010 painting files, I could only find one of the subtle ones. On this dress, I resorted to outlines in various places to establish directional lines and for definition (you can see why, since there surely isn't much value range here; that's when a dark background comes in handy). When doing floral subject matter on pale ground, as above, the stems in clear vases add direction and the darker leaves help define form.

In the 2009 files, I found this floral with pears to be among the palest, yet it has more color than those above. I like it -- perhaps the underpainting of dark red unifies the background and defines the left flower, making a harmonious whole.

Back in 2008, I did my first white roses, and there were LOTS of leaves, which are more clearly defined than recent ones. Below the roses is my first white box with white ribbon from 2008. It's fun to see old and new takes on a similar theme ...

That Would be 32!

More Radishes, 6 x 6, painted February 12th -- part of the group!

I kept counting and re-counting, but here are the 32 small paintings -- all 6 x 6 -- for the patrons of the Huntsville Museum Gala in March of this year

Yes, I was going to have absolutely NO problem doing the small patron gifts for the gala event in Huntsville, AL the first weekend in March. I was just going to breeze through these warm-up paintings last November and December and easily have the number requested by the co-chairs (two charming gals from Huntsville who donate tons of time and inspiration to the museum gala, at which I am this year's featured artist). Need I say that last Tuesday I had far short of the required number?? Having sold or given away some of the intended pieces, I still at NO time had anywhere close to 32. So for the last week, I have been steadily at the easel. Again, I am reminded of and truly appreciate the steady output of the daily painters, who create 300 + each year with skill and aplomb!

Meanwhile, the boxes were sent off today, with 32 little artworks between glassine paper and bubble wrap, all done and gone and --yippee-- we leave to visit dear friends in Florida tomorrow!

Well, I just love radishes: the crispiness, the taste with salt (though I haven't tried them with butter too, which is a popular way to serve them), the contrast of the red and green, the firm round shapes with the messy leaves. Guess I am in a bit of a radish phase.

I've been accomplishing things, and having fun too... all paintings for the Huntsville Museum Gala this March are actually in Huntsville, I have been painting with less investment and more freedom, I taught THE most fun workshop last Sunday at Huff Harrington, and we leave tomorrow to see the kids in Alaska (not one's fave destination for January, but oh well)! So things are good, perking along -- I am stretching my wings and hoping to sail this year on positive energy, and on appreciation for all of my new and old friends in this art life!

Fun evening last night...some of the wonderful Provence travelers from last September joined me and Michael at our home for a petite reunion. Everyone brought champagne, wine, hors d'oeuvres, various spices, dips, cheeses, and even some paintings! We remembered our delightful 3 hour (oui!) lunches at some of the most charming restaurants in the countryside, as well as beautiful evenings at Les Murets, overlooking the Luberon.

Top Ten

Well, it is that time (i.e., the end) of the year, when we are deluged with top 10's on movies, restaurant openings, books, etc. So, why not add to the fray? I'm posting my top ten "whoa" moments when I discovered certain paintings. Amaryllis Thoughts

Studio Table

Last week at the flower market, I found some beautiful cut amaryllis, which were headed for my dining room table. The flowers took a petite detour into my studio, where I wanted to do a quick study, aiming to keep it loose and fresh. Below are some photos I took during the painting session, from about 1 - 5 p.m.

Start - I did a pretty strong sketch in paint,

Backing up -- i.e. wiping off (!) flowers on the left side,

which were getting over-complicated and murky

Re-stating, just before I stopped for the day

Touch-ups galore were done the next day... i.e., I changed the background a bit, tried to soften the strong X in the middle formed by the crossing stems, adjusted highlights, etc. and my quick study ended up being less than quick. Meanwhile, as I look at the finished painting below and the close-up above, I like that cropped image better!

Oh well, there's always next year, and other paintings to be created : ) Have a very Merry Christmas!

And I've been goofing off! YAY... one week of running around, shopping, doing the tree and the house (sort of) and just generally having a great time. But, I HAVE been tweaking a few paintings for the Huntsville (AL) Museum Gala Event in March. Since I'm the featured artist this year, I spent much of November creating 15 pieces for the show. Unlike many painters, I like to paint without the pressure of shows. It really is just a preference, I think. Some artists like/want/need a deadline of an exhibit and rise to the challenge admirably. I would not be in that group!! Somehow, the path of painting for me is way more fun and productive when it's a want-to instead of a have-to.

Re-Visiting

Or, maybe this post should be called "Re-Gifting!" I have painted light flowing across beribboned boxes for several years now (especially at Christmas); trying different approaches keeps me interested -- and/or frustrated!

Well, here is a little MacKenzie - Childs vase that I just HAD to buy, as I loved the jauntiness of it! Since it is "small works" season at Huff Harrington and all around, I get to do what I really enjoy -- painting in the small format. As I often preach, little studies invite immediate response and loose brushwork, which are goals of mine in all of my paintings. I guess that these little ones reduce my investment in the outcome -- which usually results in a better outcome!

Well, I'm not sure if I improved matters, but I saw the original version at Huff Harrington a few weeks ago, and thought it looked too flat, as though someone had been sitting on the roses. So I brought the painting home and added the upper rose on the left, intending to play the angles. Now it looks to me like I glued the new rose onto the painting (maybe I need to warm it?) Yikes, I hate going back into a painting ... but the desire to "improve things" is always there, tempting me to tinker -- I have a feeling that it's not done yet!

Well, I am posting some very cool paintings done at last Sunday's "Fall Tune Up" workshop at Huff Harrington. Wish I had taken some shots of the set-ups, and the people, but at workshops I start running around and forget to take photos. Luckily, my painting friends sent me some!

Positive Vibes

Rose Meditation, 6 x 6

Yesterday, I taught a one-day workshop at Huff Harrington, with THE nicest group of painters, many of whom are friends from past classes, along with some new and fun additions! It was a high-energy, fast-paced practice session, using a limited palette, doing 3 - 6 studies from simple set-ups of fruit, crockery, flowers. One gal did SIX paintings, working in between 3 brief demos and lunch : )

We talked about the importance of shorthand -- i.e. less strokes, more paint, shape rather than detail. We tried to remember to look more, paint less. We talked about giving up our investment in each painting "turning out." Maybe because of that, so many paintings done yesterday were strong, colorful and free-- I'll post some images next time!

Yvonne, a painter and friend, sometimes hires a model and invites several others on consecutive Mondays for a few hours. I went two weeks ago, and didn't get a painting I liked, but I did do this brief sketch that evokes a bit of the elegant pose. Life studies of all subject matter are SO important, as I quickly realized after about a year away from live models...I am going again next Monday, and look forward to seeing what develops!!

Lately, I've been doing lots of 6 x 6's -- a good thing, since I have been noodling ideas for larger formats, but not settling on any yet (i.e wiping out). For me, it's a challenge to develop new approaches while keeping up with commitments. Figuring out the balance is my current (and ongoing) quest. YIKES! So the 6 x 6 studies are comforting, relatively risk-free, and keep the painterly paint paint paint going. I am seriously aiming to release the HAVE TO vibe, and find the WANT TO, inspired feeling that we all seek (and yet get the paintings out there too : )

SO glad to be back in Atlanta, after our trip to Provence and then out to Alaska to see the kids...we had a truly wonderful time, both places, but I really like being back to the rhythm and comforts of home. And, oh yes, back to my easel too! I have been doing lots of 6 x 6 life studies, always trying to loosen up and practice seeing nuance and little bits of truth. I can see that I was somewhat bolder with the 2nd bottle painting below, which was done 2 days after the one above...

The real deal

Well, long time, no blog...I wanted to post from Provence, but wifi a bit sketchy and time was fleeting. Meanwhile, the trip was just great! We were there for 2 weeks, with 2 different groups, lots of gorgeous weather, amazing evenings (wonderful wines too!) overlooking the Luberon, painting mornings and afternoons in different settings. Of course, we also found time to browse local markets, enjoy gourmet lunches at quaint restaurants, and laugh together each evening at La Table!

The group painted in different settings, but the focus everywhere was on seeing the large shapes, seeing values, keeping it simple, simple, simple! I nagged everyone to use bigger brushes (as usual)! We contended with a mistral, for real, the first week on the very first day, forcing most into a cafe for a sip of wine (save one hardy soul -- not me -- who braved the winds). Photos follow of the wonderful people, the paintings done and partially done, and a glimpse into the magic of Les Murets, the lovely home that was our base.

At my home in Atlanta, I have an almost totally shaded yard, so the idea of a hibiscus thriving or even growing, is pretty ridiculous. Notwithstanding that fact, about 3 weeks ago I bought a hibiscus plant, intending to paint a couple of flowers in a jar or something. Basically, I liked the creamy colors and the red centers.

Well, I never got around to it, but I did get a moment to paint this small study; since we leave for France tomorrow, I guess the hibiscus moment has passed. I intend to post from Provence, and am excited to breathe in the essence of that special place. A bientot!

One Foot Out the Door

Well, one week from tomorrow is the long-awaited departure day for France - yay! The Provence workshops are upon us ... there was a meeting at Huff Harrington yesterday to go over packing light, yet adding a few last minute art supplies, and details for the train to Avignon, etc. Of course, Ann and Sarah served champagne and tarte jambon to the attendees, and we toasted to the soon-to-be-realized dream of painting and just breathing l'essence de Provence!! (I am bringing my computer and hope to post from Les Murets).

The painting above has a certain gentle spirit that I sought - I spent lots of time refining the expressions and focus of the children, while trying to avoid too much detail. I sketched like crazy before applying paint -- not sure whether that was a good idea, since it kept me a bit literal. BUT - I really wanted to be exact in catching the flow.

Sketch (unfortunately on a reddish-tinted board, which drove me crazy) is pictured below. You can see that I was really working the angles.

Right around July Fourth, my friend Rosemary and I went to the wholesale flower market. I was buying something ordinary, don't even remember what, while she found and purchased some wonderful yellow tree peonies. The next morning, she was knocking at my door -- "you have to paint these!" So, I did, which was no easy task. They were opening, dropping petals, and changing by the minute; finally, I quit chasing the shapes and approximated the feel, or at least, that's what I was attempting! I do like the shadow and the movement of the stems here - those elements make it kind of dramatic.

While at the easel today, I kept thinking -- "I love oil paint!"

It's just so versatile... thin and sketchy, or expressive and juicy, or thick and sculptural. As a former watercolorist, I am always aware of the flexibility of oil. I can smusch edges, drag color into other areas, or just wipe totally off if needed. This afternoon, I probably should have been finishing some large paintings in progress, but instead, I did 4 or 5 small pieces (6 x 6) and just had a great day! It was nice to be enjoying the paint, and enjoying the freedom from "production" mode. When doing small studies, one is less committed to results, an attitude that often leads to freer, more soulful expression. For me, that's the ticket!

Commissions vs. Inspired Ideas, A Comparison

Well, I just read a post at www.theartfullifestyle.com, (the Huff Harrington Gallery blog) about commissions, and since I had been recently working on the one above, I was contemplating a few comments myself on that subject.

My Balloon is a good representation of the subject in a photo taken by a friend, who wanted this painting of her grandchild. I like the striped robe, but generally feel that this painting is tighter and has less soul than I aim to capture. The buyer might as well be sitting on my shoulder, as my response to the subject is more timid, less interpretive. Wish it weren't the case, but that seems to be my mode, confirming for sure that portraiture or anything even close would not be a path to personal happiness! My hat goes off to those painters who welcome the commission challenge and make it work for them.

In contrast to the balloon girl, below is one created from my photos, done simply because I liked the light effect and pose. The piece evokes a certain je ne sais quoi -- that elusive quality that makes for a better painting (and thus a happier me).

Donation Thoughts

Well, these two were painted specifically as donations for an event held annually benefitting the High Museum here in Atlanta. The request was for small gallery-wrap paintings, 10 x 10 or 12 x 12, to be auctioned online and at a luncheon in the fall. The top painting of tulips was done for last year's High Arts Day, and I did the Tiffany box for the one to be held this year.

In most cases, however, when I receive donation requests (usually for silent auctions), I give a piece I already have on hand. Several times I have donated a custom painting of a child, to be created after the purchaser wins the auction. I don't recommend this, unless one is looking for more to do. It gets complicated, as the last one of these (which I am just now completing - almost a year after the auction) ended up with the buyers wanting not 1 but 3 kids and ay yi yi!! They paid the charity a lot for it and I had made a promise, so there you go. Below is an image of that one.

Loved the simplicity of this shape -- I kind of exaggerated her head in the painting, and made her wider too, I see. The angles here appealed to me, as well as the attitude of the pose, which was better captured in the sketch than in the painting! The solid confidence of little kids is pure and strong; it's fun to pare down all elements to the minimum and let it shine.

Morning at Les Murets, 12 x 12, Sold

Bastille Day festivities were SUCH fun last Thursday evening at Huff Harrington! Despite the British-sounding name, this is an Atlanta gallery with a strong French connection, as one of the owners has properties in France, while the other owner and the staff all are serious francophiles. They take art lovers on trips to France, and often go on art discovery and buying trips. (Huff Harrington has a great blog too...www.theartfullifestyle.blogspot.com).

So, for the past four years, Bastille Day celebrations have been held each July 14th. This year, the accordion player was circulating, while loads of people were sipping wine and checking out the art! There were wonderful pieces by French artists, along with French landscapes and inspirations by American artists. I always love being part of that scene, and hope to gather lots of new material during our painting trip to Provence this September. Can't wait!

Well, I've been going through the summer swoon, painting a lot, and wiping a lot! I should just stick to swimming and forget about it for awhile, which I plan on doing soon...

Meanwhile, the painting above was done for a friend, from a photo of her daughter when she was little. There's a sketchy quality that I like about this piece, and I'm happy for something I like at this point. I reminded myself today that my goal is to merely suggest things with paint - and for some reason, I often forget that elusive truth!! (oh yes, simplicity)...

I was energized yesterday by some really good and eager painters at a one-day workshop I taught here in Atlanta -- it is just great to be with others on this quest to say more with less. Tonight my husband and I were at dinner, and I told him how much I have come to appreciate the art life that I'm now experiencing, which has truly unfolded in a magical way!

French Radishes

I took this small study to the gallery (Huff Harrington Fine Art here in Atlanta) about 3 weeks ago, along with several others. I have been selling some small studies lately -- often these loose little "warm-up" paintings have a bit of sketchy magic.

This particular one of radishes was whisked off to Paris (oui, unbeknownst to me) by Sam Jones, a gallerina who is also a wonderful interior designer. She was joining Ann Huff to add some finishing touches to the newly-refurbished Paris apartment (see www.theartfullifestyle.blogspot.com for the captivating saga of this place). Below is a photo of the new jewel-box kitchen, with my tres petite study visible over there on the stove hood. Tres jolie, non?

Yesterday, I taught a one-day workshop on painting studies of children from photographs. It was just a great day, with 14 participants at Huff Harrington here in Atlanta, which is a fun place to hang out. After a short demo, we talked a lot about how essential it is to catch the gesture and the proportions of our little subjects. So, we spent LOTS of time on placement on the canvas with charcoal before commencing with paint, as shown below in a couple of mine:

All in all, a great way to spend the day -- painting, learning a bit, and then having a sip of wine at the end, as we patted ourselves on the back for great results!!

Necessary Roughness

Well, there is a tv show being filmed in Atlanta, called "Necessary Roughness"-- and the set designers have gathered paintings from around town, including several of mine. First they did the pilot, and a few of my small pieces were rented from Huff Harrington Fine Art...then the show was picked up by the USA network, and they recently "leased" 2 more for the set. I don't know what the show is about, but I plan to watch it on June 29th -- mostly to check out the walls!

Speaking of "Necessary Roughness," I have been thinking that I NEED some roughness in my sometimes over-cooked paintings. In fact, the painting above, "Ponytail," was painted entirely with the splayed brush pictured below as an exercise to stay loose, which was my only option!

... and on my Easyl

I painted with some plein air artists at a great place two weeks ago... Loganberry Farm near Cleveland, Georgia; poppies were blooming, along with many beautiful flowers. It was just a great day, though the summer in the South is almost upon us, and it's already really HOT. I had so much fun chatting with the other painters that one study by me was the result of my day; the others created at least two!

The painting above is a take on the abandoned farm house, by Debra Nadelhoffer - and she did it on a canvas that was 20 x 24, no less! I saw the finished piece at Burton Gallery last weekend, and it's really nice.

Next is a shot of Cathy Ritch in action - she organized the day. I used (for the first time) one of those in-ground umbrellas like Cathy's below -- my husband gave it to me for Christmas. I love it, since it can cover me AND the entire paintbox and palette!

Well, above is my take on the set-up as photographed below. These flowers were some of the ones on hand at my friend's North Carolina home, which I visited two weeks ago. I included the photo to illustrate how I tried to simplify the subject and also how I warmed the colors, partly because of my very limited palette, and also because I am interested in relationships of value and color, not exact color matching. Also, I didn't even try to create peonies, per se, just color fields and a bit of life on the canvas. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this small painting because it has some feeling and truth; it has a painterly feel, and for me - paint is the point - rather than rendering a copy of the subject matter.

Yesterday morning, I went to the Saturday Market in Sandy Springs, and was thoroughly enjoying the sun and the music, all the vendors, umbrellas and people who were there. I took many photos, and then came home to quickly do a life study of some young beets (before we cooked them), and a study from one of my photos of a little girl. Of course, I painted into the little girl today (not a good plan) and lost a bit of the freshness I had captured yesterday, in my attempt to "improve things!" It's a good idea to hide one's paintings for a while after completion, making it easier to avoid the "refine, refine, refine" temptation! Oh well, tomorrow is a new day...

Back to Basics

Bird's the Word, 6 x 6

I have been wanting to step it up in my painting, so DUH! I actually AM doing daily small paintings, i.e. "warm ups" each and every day. Recently, I was reading the blog of a fellow painter and friend, Kathy Cousart, who described a terrific workshop recently held here in Atlanta with an artist I admire, Carol Marine. Carol did one demo wherein she was counting the brushstrokes, trying to capture the subject in as few as possible (I think she did it in 47). The little study above is a result of my challenge to me to do just that: this one was about 60 strokes; it was fun and energizing - YAY!

Early tomorrow I'm joining a plein air group up in north Georgia to paint on a farm, continuing on the quest to get out of the studio and keep it fresh and loose!

Also, as of today, we scheduled another one-day workshop at Huff Harrington Fine Art. It will be on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at the gallery in Buckhead. Huff Harrington is quite a lovely place to paint, and one can sign up at info@huffharrington.com, or call (404) 257-0511.

Well, since it is already 90 degrees and muggy here in Atlanta, it was nice to visit my friend up in the mountains, where it was cool and sunny! Of course, I was wanting to get out of town to switch up my subject matter, but when I got there, Cindy had so many beautiful FLOWERS all around, that we ended up painting those! We just did some studies and practiced seeing and color mixing. As you can see, she had great little vignettes everywhere:

First afternoon, Cindy did a nice study of the sunflowers in bold strokes, which was a great start to her getting back into painting after a lengthy break.

The next day, we set up a simple pot and apple to work on massing and turning the form:

We were using Golden Open Acrylics ( I am practicing for a trip this fall ), and of course, as you can see above, a very limited palette...titanium white, cadmium yellow light (called cadmium primrose in this line), cad red medium, and ultramarine blue. That's the palette I almost always use; for me, it makes things simpler and often leads to subtle mixtures, which I can never exactly duplicate. That in turn, creates variety, which is a good thing! Now I AM going to paint something different...

Gotta Change It Up!

Huffington Roses, 40 x 30

Well, I keep meaning to get out of the studio and paint something different...and then I continue to paint the flowers I have around the house in a jar or vase. Time for a change! Luckily, I am going up to visit and paint with my friend Cindy in the North Carolina mountains next week; I plan on setting up outside and inside too with subjects designed by Cindy -- she has wonderful taste.

On the workshop front, I have scheduled one in Chattanooga (contact Lisa at lseagoart@aol.com) next March, and am in the process of booking one in the Texas Hill Country (contact Dena@wenmohsranch.com) next April, 2012. I will also be scheduling a fall "tune-up" at Huff Harrington Fine Art here in Atlanta in early November, 2011. So things are busy and ever-changing... I'm inspired to mix it up in all areas -- hope to stay fresh and keep having fun!

Things Are Looking Up

Ease and Flow, 24 x 24

Well, thank heavens, I am painting with more confidence lately, which is a good thing! I picked up some tulips at the flower market last Thursday, waited 2 days for them to fall (although if I want flowers NOT to fall, they promptly do so within one hour), and painted them over the weekend. I also did another large piece and 2 smaller ones within the last few days. Below is a studio shot of the set-up for the red tulips:

I'm still liking light backgrounds, with traces of color and shimmer going on. Now it's time to get outside and paint something different. Some of my art friends and I have scheduled a few plein air outings during the past week or so, but we keep getting storm threats here in Atlanta...maybe next week!

Small Painting, Heading West

Proving that you never know, the painting above was accepted into the 2011 National OPA Exhibit. This year, I submitted 2 entries, feeling more confident about a larger, 24 x 24 piece, but this one was selected! I think it might be the smallest painting in the entire show. Devin Galleries in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is hosting this year's Oil Painters of America National Exhibit, June 10th - July 9th; it's the 20th anniversary for the OPA National Exhibition honoring representational/traditional oil painting and painters. I'm proud to be in the exhibit and to be a signature member of this organization.

Entering national shows is a nice resume enhancer, should an artwork be selected -- and, as Kevin MacPherson says, no one ever knows about your attempt should you not make it. I submitted entries to OPA for 5 or 6 years before I had the first one accepted in 2006. I don't paint for these shows (trying to create a "winner," or a "good painting," typically is not a way for me to succeed). From available work, I usually pick one or two to submit which I think might have a chance. Judging is by its very nature subjective, and what I think are sure bets often don't get the nod. When it works, though, it's a nice thing!

Ease and Flow

Lately, I have been painting a lot, re-working things, and generally being less than thrilled with the results, i.e. "ease and flow" have not been my companions of late! Above is a small "warm up" study, done in 15 minutes, that I like better than three other pieces which I have been "over-thinking," (one example below).

I spoke with my painting friend, Bill Davidson, today about a plein air event, and told him I have been spending lots of time, resulting in not much, and he said "Uh oh, you're getting ready to grow!" Well, I certainly hope that's the case - and that better times lie ahead!

On a positive note, I taught a FUN workshop last Sunday, my first at Huff Harrington Fine Art. The gallery setting was lovely, with French music piping through the rooms - and sunshine beaming in the windows. It was a great group of painters--who did 3 paintings in about 3 hours, and seemed to enjoy it too. Wish I had some photos of the proceedings, but I was running around so much, I forgot to take them.

Just Home from Alaska

We returned 2 days ago from a weeklong visit to see the kids, and we had a delightful time... it is always uplifting to get outside my world and art thoughts and see through the eyes of a 2 and 5 -year old. I took some amazing photos for painting, and of the kids, and just spent timing BE-ing instead of DO-ing, which is a good thing!

Since I have paintings in progress, but nothing new as yet photographed, below are a few pieces I overlooked when showing my "collection" last month.

Wedding Morning, 30 x 15

Well, of course I agreed to do a painting for a friend to give as a wedding present. The couple in question married last fall, and the family friend saw the photos online; she loved the shot of the wedding dress hanging in the window, with the landscape behind. I said, sure, that I would do this, from a tiny photo online. Needless to say, I should have considered matters a bit more before agreeing to the project! The photo above is the second entire painting done of this subject, and this one is better than the first, but ay yi yi!! Hopefully, I have learned the lesson (once again) that people-pleasing and painting are not necessarily compatible.

It is of course, impossible to read the minds of others, and creating a painting from nebulous source material in a fashion that may or may not appeal to the well-intentioned donor, nevermind the eventual recipient, is too crazy to even decipher. So of course, I tried to do exactly that, and ended up spending WAY too much time and effort. I truly believe that the next time such an "opportunity" arises, I will be able to graciously decline!

Workshop Fun

Great Group! I'm on the end at the left; it was an uplifting and FUN weekend...

16 painters joined me last weekend for a workshop in Atlanta, at the studio of Yvonne Mendez, which was sponsored by The Art School in Sandy Springs. We just had a GREAT time, and I had a wonderful experience with these talented people. Luckily, one of the participants, Denise Rose, sent me some photos of everything, the people, the set-ups, and me in action, which I share below. Prior to teaching a workshop, I get anxious and worry about it all: i.e, " Can I paint? What will I share? YIKES! " Fortunately, as in the past, it went well, the attendees were SO open and sharing, and it was just a rewarding experience for me.

Next workshops that I'm teaching are at Huff Harrington Fine Art in Atlanta, both of which are sold out, but one to two more will be scheduled in the fall.

On Her Way, 20 x 16

Well, I am leaving today to visit with my friend at her home on the Georgia coast...yay! The painting above is a sketch of my granddaughter, Sarah, from a photo taken last year. She was "on her way" to get more coloring supplies! I thought it a timely title after teaching a great workshop over the weekend; the painters are "on the way" to a bit more freedom and expression and I'm "on the way" to Sea Island! Sixteen ladies (and two more for the demos) joined me each day to paint in a workshop sponsored by Donna Thomas, of the Art School in Sandy Springs, here in Atlanta.

What a great group! And good work they did too...it was an uplifting experience for me to be with others on this quest to find our intuitive selves and to see what's before us a bit better. I will post some group photos and other photos soon. Meanwhile, I just received a blog post from participant Kathy Cousart (www.kathycousart.blogspot.com), featuring a nice painting she completed in class on Sunday.

Time to Blog, and I'm in a Fog!

Memories (done at Millie Gosch's Farm in October), 12 x 9

We have been painting and renovating a bit over the past few weeks, so my home/studio time has been in between hammers and the smells of fresh paint and glaze on kitchen cabinets. While rearranging paintings and editing accessories, I happened upon this plein air study in my studio, and decided that I liked it, all unfinished and sketchy. Maybe it is the warm undertone, kind of uniting the painted marks, or perhaps it is the immediacy of an impression not overworked. At any rate, I put it into a frame, and hung it in my house, along with a few other pieces of mine done in the past year. My art at home has been not too great (as for Nancy Franke paintings), since I tend to take new work to the gallery, and have older paintings done years ago on my walls. One bright spot here at my home, however, is the small collection of paintings from artists whose work I admire, gathered over time at a price I was willing to pay. Below are a few shots of that tiny collection:

The painting is by Ted Goerschner, and I love the freshness and the value contrast. I purchased it at Lagerquist Gallery in Atlanta nearly 10 years ago.

This one is by Carol Marine, one of her daily paintings, that I bought 3 years ago; she's coming to Atlanta soon to do a workshop at the Art School in Sandy Springs, which has been sold out for over a year!

Here is one by me (little girl),with a Pascal Bouterin in the middle, a Kevin MacPherson plein air study from Ireland next to that and another piece of mine beside the lamp. Sorry about the photo!

This piece is by Scott Burdick, and I really like it. You will note that I tend to collect figures and head studies, evidently a habit of many of us who are painters.

This painting is by Diane Eugster, a figurative painter from Nevada; I found it at Willow Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ.

Below is a conte crayon drawing by Susan Lyon, which I bought in Charleston, SC, at The Sylvan Gallery.

There's a Nancy Franke piece of a petite ballerina on the far wall, but on the table is a demo I purchased in Jackson Hole, WY, at a workshop with Carolyn Anderson.

Here is a study by John Schieffer, which my husband bought in Scottsdale...he loves the detail and the precision of this piece.

Below is a painting that I purchased at Sage Creek Gallery in Santa Fe, when I was there almost two years ago at the OPA National show; it's by Kevin Bielfuss, and I love the painterly quality and the soft palette.

This is a study by Ray Roberts. I took a workshop with him at Milly Gosch's Farm in Newnan, GA, a few years ago, and I liked his simple shapes and forms in this painting.

This is a fun watercolor that I LOVE by my Atlanta painting friend, Margaret Hathaway! It's so loose and expressive.

Below is a landscape by Joseph Paquet, a Plein Air Painter of America: I took his workshop in Atlanta several years ago.

And finally, a small, wonderful painting by Andree Thobaty, a French artist (represented in Atlanta by Huff Harrington Fine Art) whose work is simple and powerful, truly qualities I admire!

Dianne's Flowers

Well, I painted with some of my inspiring art friends at Dianne Harrison's very zen riverfront studio last week, and did this study of one of her set-ups. I had brought along a (New Traditions) panel that was toned red/orange, which I mostly use for landscape, and I struggled with it. But that bright toning kind of worked to get me out of my recent pale mode. Below is Juanita Kauffman's ipad painting, all free and bright; it makes a tempting case for the digital creation, non?

White Roses, and Painting with Friends...

I had a great day yesterday, having lunch with several painting friends, 4 of whom went with me to Italy last fall...we were viewing the members' art show at Cherokee Club, and just enjoying our time. Last Tuesday, our group painted together -- and Cathy Groome contributed some white roses that her husband kindly purchased for us...my take above, and the set-up below (thanks to Mary Beard for the photo):

Sometimes, I like the sketchy quality of the initial painting and do little to finish, as is evident above! There wasn't much local color here, so for me, it was a challenge to get some warmth on the canvas...

I have posted below some of the paintings the others were doing of this VERY simple set-up...it's fun to see the different interpretations.

It's Trinity Time!

Well, it's easy to tell that I did this bowl for The Trinity School in Atlanta right after we returned from Italy in late September, 2010, while still entranced by the vistas from Villa di Piazzano, outside Cortona. Recently, I was honored to hear from Amanda Szwast, a Trinity mother and volunteer for the annual art extravaganza: she informed me that my bowl was chosen to be the one featured at the live auction later this week. The bamboo bowls are 30 inches in diameter, and about thirty Atlanta artists contributed their creations for an online auction (http://www.trinityatl.org/spotlight_on_art/auction_preview.aspx). Anyway, below is a poor photo of the scene in question at the villa, and then below that, an image of the plein air study I did at the spot back in September!

One has to look hard to see the Italian villa in the distance, but I promise, it was there, though I surely exaggerated it for a focal point!

Back from South Africa

We are back from our 2-week sojourn to South Africa... a magical and beautiful trip with my husband and some friends. It was not a painting trip at all, but nonetheless a wonderful experience.

I did the study above before we departed, another small addition to my offerings as part of a group show at Huff Harrington. Titled "A Grand Affair," the show featured paintings priced at $1,000 or under. I attended the opening last Friday evening, complete with jet-lag, and it was quite the event!! Lots of people, lots of sales, and a fun vibe... people were glad to get original art at a great price. Personally, I was glad to be home in one piece!

Back in Action

Well, the name of the painting above is an apt title for getting back in the swing of things after holiday fun! I like to set up little arrangements to tune up my seeing after a break from the easel. Below is a shot of the (very simple) set-up:

I eliminated the fourth leaf and just tried to get some paint quality going. Time to re-learn an old lesson, namely, sometimes we forget how to paint ( at least I do! ) Remedy: get back to painting from life, and use big brushes, just as one of my painting friends reminded me not long ago - don't forget the Big Brush Theory. Oh, duh! I need to take my own advice, as we are off and running into this new and exciting year.

Fresh Start

I painted this one the other day to go in a frame that I had, since I removed that frame from another small piece, and replaced it with a new one. You might say that I am kind of a frame nut, and probably spend more than necessary, but I do think that it makes a difference. Having done many a painting on gallery wrap canvas, I still most often end up with the piece in a floater or restretching and framing traditionally. My work just looks better (to me) with a border! My gallery price point does not lend itself to expensive frames, but I am drawn to them. Yesterday, I received an email from Deborah Paris, a wonderful painter who lives in Texas; her husband makes some really good-looking frames, and the prices are good too. Meanwhile, I've been noodling a fresh perspective, composition-wise; the little painting above is one result. I kind of like it; it was inspired by my friend, Nancy Armstrong, who created the "fresh start" below for a recent charity event!

Au Revoir, Poire!

Well, the painting above was done about 2 years ago -- it has been in 3 different galleries and did not find a home, so when it came back recently from Denver, I took a look and went, "Oh, yeah!"

I could see that the pear totally didn't belong there -- too big, too bright, too too whatever! So I thought that I'd delete the pear -- a simple study of white on white would surely be a better thing (if I could match the colors). With a bit of tinkering, I actually was able to do that; then I placed the painting in a nice frame, took it to Huff Harrington 2 days later, and it was purchased the same day! The moral to my story is "simpler is (almost) always better." The revised effort is pictured below... (background color looks way different, but I didn't change it - must be my new camera) ...

Painting at the Gallery

Ooh, Tiffany Blue, 12 x 12

Last Saturday, my friend, Brenda, played Christmas music on the piano at Huff Harrington Fine Art, while I did a small painting demo. The Huffingtons served a bit of wine and some fresh cookies and it was a fun afternoon. The idea was for me to paint a Tiffany box, so Ann and Meg got me a gift from the namesake store here in Atlanta in time for me to have on hand for the event. I hadn't looked inside yet, because I wanted to paint it first. Then I couldn't remove/change the ribbon till I finished the painting, which I did yesterday...so here we are... below is the wrapped box, and below that, the contents!

I was able to approximate the Tiffany blue color pretty well with my limited palette (ultramarine blue, cadmium lemon, cadmium red medium, and titananium zinc white, in case you were wondering)....I did have some cerulean blue on hand just in case!

Inside was a sparkly crystal votive, complete with candle, which is already now in use...Behind is the painting, in a nice frame by my friend, Munroe d'antignac, of d'antignac Custom Frames (www.dcframes.com).

Radishes and Roses, Demo in progress

Today was a great day... I painted with 4 other Atlanta artists at the beautiful, light and spacious riverfront studio of Dianne Harrison. We had a wonderful time, sharing ideas and practicing. I did a small demo, above, in the morning, then we had a delicious lunch to which all contributed (except me)! After lunch, we painted with paper towels as our "brushes," forcing focus on large shapes. One of the painters, Juanita Kauffman, actually painted on her iPad -- and got some cool results -- see pics below.

Yikes! It's (almost) Christmas

Time is speeding by, the calendar is full, painting time is compressed, maybe that's better! Perhaps one's focus can be enhanced by small windows of studio time...this year, I've decided not to worry about it all, just enjoy and paint when it works out...Cold weather has set in tonight, while last evening, on Thanksgiving, we all sat outside for appetizers and wine, because the air was balmy. The cold is energizing to me, and I hope to be energized for this busy and fun season!

Dark Backgrounds

Maybe because it is colder outside, or who knows why, I have been wanting to paint shapes against a dark background. I have just spent about 2 years exploring light backgrounds, so maybe that is the reason -- it was time for a change. The painting above is the 3rd attempt on this board ( linen mounted on 3/4" gatorboard ); there are, or were, 2 other paintings in various forms of completion underneath... I guess that is one way to achieve a lively paint quality, though surely not the easiest!

Well, I used the same table, same light, same pears (comice pears, which I really like), yet different backgrounds, thus creating different takes on a VERY familiar subject. I have to say I enjoy very much doing the little ones...one or two a day, before or after other things; they have an immediacy which I would love to be able to achieve in larger pieces. I am taking these little ones mostly to Huff Harrington Fine Art, my wonderful gallery here in Atlanta; these smalls are fun and affordable, and therefore are selling prior to the Little Jewels show (opening Nov. 27th) for which they are/were intended. Christmas is coming, and people like to purchase smaller works at affordable prices as gifts for themselves or others. I truly enjoy the small format -- I can try things without investment, finish them quickly, save or paint over, and move on. The daily painters figured this out long ago... do daily 6 x 6 paintings from life -- which are fresh, painterly and which, without a doubt, improve one's skills dramatically. I try to do a small "warm up" painting before starting a larger piece, and when I actually DO this, the day is a good painting day.... I like framing these small pieces in small floaters, so that the entire painted surface is visible.

Well, we are back from our latest sojourn to Alaska to see the kids -- what a great time we had, despite the gloom, clouds and rain that settled over Sitka for 6 of the 7 days we were there. We were missing the Tuscan sun, for sure, and are glad to be back for some good old Georgia sun at home.

The painting above and the other studies from the Italy trip were done with Golden Open Acrylics. The painting group and I decided to use these for travel, to avoid the solvent search and to speed drying time. For the most part, we liked them. The paints stayed workable enough for a 2-hour session, although they were a bit runny out of the tube. I will probably use them next year for the painting trip to Provence (for details on the great itinerary, check out www.huffharrington.com), since I like the advantages in the field. Also, I used just my basic four colors -- in the Goldens, they were Ultramarine Blue, Cad Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Primrose, and Titanium White. I picked up a convenience color that we all enjoyed -- light ultramarine blue, which was a periwinkle-ish hue, and made a great violet purple.

Below is a harbor shot, so typical of Sitka... I took lots of photos of this type when we had any light at all, so I could interpret in paint some of the grey skies and wonderful reflections. Inspiring me are the subtle, amazing Richard Schmid paintings of southeast Alaska in his book, "Alla Prima."

More Toscana!

Tuscan Morning, 12 x 12

A few more trip notes...the weather was sunny and perfect most days, and we painted in Cortona and also in Chianti, on the grounds of a castle overlooking amazing vistas. We also had a cooking class at the Villa, and ate the most delicious tiny artichokes, porcini crostini, saffron-laced fresh pasta, roasted veal, and little raisin and vin santo biscotti for dessert. We ate on the terrace, under umbrellas, and felt pretty lucky that day! Afterwards, we actually painted, telling ourselves that the wine was freeing our brushstrokes...

As Jean Dortch said, "It is good to wear a hairnet when pouring wine!"

A couple of paintings follow, first two by Nancy Armstrong, and last two by Wendy Jackson (she used Arches Rough paper for a lot of hers...it gave a nice, sparkly effect). All of our work was done with Golden Open Acrylics.

So far, that's all I have received, but am looking forward to getting more paintings. I enjoyed using a transparent orange toning on most of my work there. I mistakenly used a board toned that way today at a session with some other painters, when we had a model (a ballerina) -- whoa -- what a mess, and so difficult to judge values and color relationships. Won't do that again! It is very nice, however, to be using oils oncemore.

Fabulous Trip to Tuscany

This is one of many studies I started during our amazing trip to Tuscany 2 weeks ago. My fellow painters were a congenial and delightful group - we just had so much fun! Below is a shot of Kathy Bowman and Georgia McAuley setting up their easels at this spot on our last, rather overcast day.

This one was painted as a donation for the High Museum fundraiser in November

Well, somehow six weeks have slipped by since my last post! Meanwhile, I just returned from Italy, where we have been for almost two weeks, painting with a wonderful group for 7 of those days; I will have much to post soon. We experienced just a great trip, with fabulous sunny weather and shimmering Tuscan vistas. That was my first painting trip to Europe -- with little hassle -- i.e. paints made it through security (albeit it in checked luggage); we all used Golden Open Acrylics, which worked out pretty well.

It was nice to have water soluble paint in the fields, but we all missed the richness of oils. I will be posting some of my field studies, as well as some great ones done by the other painters - (we also cooked, and drank plenty of vino, laughing all the way : ) Bye for now!

Well, the small painting above turned out to be popular at the fun, festive, and very French Bastille Day celebration at Huff Harrington Fine Art, here in Atlanta. That piece is 12 x 12, and sold quickly. It was requested that I do a large version of this painting, which I had painted from a photo taken at Les Murets, the lovely Provence home of Ann and Bill Huff. So, I started to go big - a 36 x 36 version; quickly I realized that I did not have enough information to make the image interesting in that large size -- at least to me. Deciding to ditch the project after 2 good days of tinkering and lots of paint, I did two other pieces from Les Murets -- sized 24 x 24:

Then I again began the 36 x 36, for some reason ( well, since a gallery patron requested it )! I am still noodling it and not sure how it will turn out. I am tired of painting from all of these photos, certainly tired of tables, and am realizing the folly of painting to please others. Not following my own muse, I surely have no way of knowing what it is someone else might like. Oh well, I am looking forward to other things: painting with art friends on Monday, live model; then I'll set up something here in my studio. Au revoir, la table!

My friend Yvonne Mendez has a really nice studio here in Atlanta, and she sometimes hires a model, calls a few painters, and hosts a 3- hour session. I haven't done this in over a year, and I can tell! Last Monday, we met at her studio, the model that was hired forgot the appointment, so Kathy Wochele's daughter, Leah, came to the rescue. My sketch is not much of a likeness, but there is a quality to it that I like. It was my third attempt after a few wipeouts ... Luckily, there are 3 more sessions scheduled for this summer!

Well, I have been painting from photos this past 10 days, mining for scenes from France, and especially Provence, for the Bastille Day show and celebration at Huff Harrington Fine Art, here in Atlanta. Not that I am central to this show of mostly French artists and work, but I have enjoyed doing some small "postcards" in the past, so I thought I'd do a few this year. A week of travail -- I didn't have any images that captured my fancy, so I painted some that didn't, to poor results. I then painted over 2 of them and I have 3 - 4 fairly decent ones now. They are vastly helped by some lovely frames from my friend and artisan here in Atlanta, Munroe d'antignac. Below are are couple of photos of other postcards in these new frames (sorry for the out of kilter shots).

Well, I finished and delivered the painting of Evie ( I had posted the initial sketch a month or so ago), and promised to post the final result, so here she is. I am so happy that her mother is very pleased with this study, always gratifying when doing a commission. The mother is a beautiful writer, and expressed so well to me the feeling she wanted in the painting, which really helped!

Workshop Demo

Favorite Things, 16 x 12

Well, technically this is not a workshop demo, since I had to pull it together at home, having wiped off lots of the bottom half at the workshop I taught 2 weeks ago on painting children. I like, however, the sketchy quality of the piece, and decided to quit before I lost that effect. I see some things I would change -- for instance, the book could be simplified, and I don't think I like the pink border being the same size as the pink dress straps. This sketch was done from a photo of Sarah - pictured in yesterday's post - when she was nearly two. I am almost finished with the portrait study of Evie (sketch was posted several weeks ago), and I will share it when complete!

Nestled, 6 x 8

Well, we are back from our 2 week visit to Alaska, and we had the BEST time.... above is a little "warm up" painting I did prior to leaving, and I posted it because it is so WARM and that is the understatement for Atlanta right now, especially after our return from Sitka, where it was 52 - 65 degrees the entire time! I was able to get some wonderful photos of greyish, smoky harbors and nice skies for future paintings. I did not take my paints, as Michael and I devoted our time to the kids and of course, the grands - Eli and Sarah, ages 1 and 4. I am posting 2 nice little photos of 2 of my favorite subjects!

My EasyL box with an oil sketch

A couple of weeks ago, I went out to a farm near the Gallery at Paper Mill Road, met a few painters from Atlanta, and we had a great couple of hours in the morning, painting in the shade. I tried an underpainting of transparent orange, which really came in handy that day, with all of the green grass, leaves, shrubs, etc. I wouldn't always use this bright toning, but I was happy to have done so with that little study. It IS nice to get out of the studio, though I don't seem to venture out unless meeting others!!

Well, I have kids on my mind, as next Wednesday, I am teaching a one-day workshop on painting children, and I have been progressing on a portrait of the little one sketched above. Commissions are always a challenge - seeing is compromised by imagining the seeing of another (i.e. the commisson-er)!

I totally admire portrait artists, who take the plunge every day - trying to please two masters. That being said, I do love painting children whose images I have captured at the ballet studio or at the pool or beach. Their chunky bodies and the very little shapes of them are captivating to me -- I try to do an honest and not too "sweet" portrayal, with varying results! Below is my latest ballet-inspired painting, and I will post the completed painting of Evie, sketched above, when done.

Branching Out, 24 x 24

Well, when I was at the beach last month with my good friend, I found a little antique fish plate/shallow bowl, and I had been wanting one ever since I would see this type of piece in Laura Robb's wonderful work. So, I bought it and am now in love with working it into various paintings. And, I see that 2 pears have been making the cut lately as well....I had to really warm up the fish plate in the painting below since the linen background color is so gray.

Pose of the Rose

Rose Poetry, 12 x 12

Well, I have been away and busy catching up, and am just getting to posting the rose painting that I mentioned last time. I didn't totally capture what I saw as the grace of the drooping rose, but I finished it last week, and decided it was fine. It is hard for me to go back into a painting and find the colors and even the motivation that I had when starting, yet I often am trying to do just that, to varying results! I have a gorgeous frame from Barbara Carter Frames (www.barbaracarterframes.com), which I am using on this piece, and it helps matters quite a bit.

Well, here is another somewhat random subject - but different from my usual crocks, fruit and flowers.

I have been letting something catch my eye around the house and painting it! It is oddly freeing to just paint, and paint whatever! Meanwhile, today was an interesting day... I did several sketches on canvas that I loved, and still could not get an effect I liked on the now totally drooped roses. Luckily, I took a photo yesterday, and will finish next week after I return from a brief sojourn in Tucson.

Where's My Purse, 9 x 12

My soft leather yellow bag, which I was ready to recycle, caught my eye last week, and I decided to paint it for a (slightly longer) warm up... I love the way the light caught the near side of this purse, and the slouchy "attitude" of the thing. Meanwhile, I spent 2 hours today trying to catch the somewhat slumping "attitude" of a rose, that I loved observing, and could not quite catch. I did the rest of the small painting, and hope to finally communicate with paint the wonderful "pose of the rose" tomorrow. I'll post when done!

Julep Cup

I painted a little julep cup on Sunday for a warm-up, inspired by the Kentucky Derby I guess! I've been painting outside this week... I began 2 floral set ups en plein air yesterday -- caught the light effect on each and laid them in...hope to finish today. Also, I've been working on several other paintings, trying to figure out what is needed, and doing smalls in between. As I preach in my workshops, it's good to do

a quick alla prima exercise each day -- a small 20 - 30 minute study of anything -- a pear, a box, etc. In fact, this morning I painted my yellow purse. Until recently, I had not been doing many of these, and decided I need to follow my own advice (duh!), to loosen up before I work on larger pieces.

By Sunday, I should have some paintings finished and will post some new work. Below is a picture of my easel out on the front deck; we have a waterfall out there, and the atmosphere is great. I dragged a large easel outside so I could work on 20 x 20 linen panels (from New Traditions - www.newtraditionsartpanels.com - I love them). Bye for now!

Three Pear Demo, 12 x 12

Whew! I taught a 2-day workshop this weekend, now over, and it was so much fun! I always get nervous ahead of time about doing a decent demo, keeping my thoughts straight, being able to say what I mean, and just connecting in general. It went great -- it was an honor for me to have painters travel from Alabama, Florida and North Carolina, as well as from here in Georgia, of course - what a terrific and friendly group. As usual, I'm pretty certain that I learned more than they did. Above is a pear demo by me, and below is a study done by Kathy Broyles, from Atlanta, which is fresh and wonderful! Coincidentally, she won the "lottery" for the demo above. I am exhausted, but continue to be gratified that so many good painters want to spend some time with me as the teacher.

Unexpected

"Tiny Dress," 30 x 24

Well, I dropped off the painting above last week at Huff Harrington, and wonderful Meg said, "this is something new for you, no?" and the framer said the same thing! I didn't even get that -- still don't... I was just painting a small dress on a hook in my studio, but I guess we all get identified with certain subject matter, rather than as painters. I was in San Antonio this past weekend, at Salon International at the amazing Greenhouse Gallery, where I had 2 paintings selected for this annual exhibit. (Also, my friend and fellow Atlantan, Bill Davidson, had THREE paintings juried into the show, and he won the landscape award). Another unexpected development was that my painting of yet another rare subject for me -- a dog -- was selected for an Award of Merit by Everett Raymond Kinstler, the judge! I was on Cloud Nine, and still am... at any rate, "Basking," below, is one of those rare paintings that just come out, truly painting itself, and when that happens, you know it!! So, it has been kind of - in fact -- a totally "unexpected" week!

This painting was done a few months back, but I am looking at it and thinking that it would be fun to paint something reflective today... I love playing with these mercury glass bottles in my collection of props, and I recently bought some new silvery vases that might be interesting to try. As I tell the painters in my workshops, there isn't a special secret to painting silver, just paint what you are seeing, and it starts looking shiny! I'll see if that happens today. It is good to be back home and in the studio after our brief trip to New Orleans.

In the Cove, Sitka, 12 x 16

Well, my son Matt and his wonderful family are moving from Orcas Island, WA to Sitka, AK next month. He went to college there, and fell in love with the pristine forests and seaside vistas, as well as the Alaska vibe. So, he and his sweet wife Ann are moving back...and taking little Sarah (4) and Eli (1)...so, Michael and I will now be trekking to Alaska! Above is a small study I did this week from a photo taken in Sitka about 10 years ago (not that it looks particularly Alaska-ish, whatever that might be). I am thinking it would be nice to stay up there for a month or so in the summer and seek out some good painting spots...we are learning to embrace this new development.

Spring Fever, 16 x 16

Well, today was the first nice, really nice day here in Atlanta in ages, warm and sunny; I should have ventured down to the river to paint, but I stayed in the studio, and painted some new flowers I bought yesterday. I was discouraged with this, almost wiped it off, and then pulled it back to life by layering on yet thicker paint. I have been in the mode of incorporating the little blue and white bowl lately; I love the shape and the colors and reflections. Sometimes I think I need to hide some of my props from me so I don't keep using them as much!

This is my sweet and wonderful granddaughter, Sarah, age 4. Michael and I visited the kids in Orcas Island, WA last week, the reason for my absence. We had the best time, and hiked to the beach on Saturday, with Sarah leading the way. Below is a painting I did of her at age 2 1/2 at an Easter Egg Hunt here in Atlanta. I like the composition on this small piece.

Sarah now has a little brother, Eli, who is 1, but I haven't painted him as yet...I look forward to beach scenes with the two of them (hopefully, one day)! Meanwhile, we're back in Atlanta and I am back into the studio tomorrow. I will do a few warm-ups to shake off the rust.

Here is the painting to which I referred in my first post (not pictured until now). I mentioned that I was working on a large rose piece and how - in progress - I changed the vase to a jar, removed the blue and white bowl, etc. I now think I may be finished with the painting, but I will still let it sit in the studio for a while to see what it may need. Sometimes I totally know when I am finished, and/or if I like the painting, but this one has been around a long time (for me), and I don't know how I feel about it. Ah, the perils of the large painting (again for me)! Below is a photo of the original set up. Above is the painting to date! It is still freezing here, and I am hiding in the studio today.

Glimpse of Spring, 24 x 20

Getting back in the groove after a workshop is never easy, so I took some of the flowers left from our setups this weekend, and did a sketch in oil on Tuesday. It is pretty loose, but there's something I like in the spontaneity, so I will leave it alone, at least for now. It is a cold and sunny day today -- perfect for staying in the studio.

First Day Demo, 12 x 12

Well, last weekend's workshop was my largest one (15 students) to date. I loved the venue - spacious and well-lit, just perfect for that size group. We had fun, and hopefully, all learned a few things as well. I always learn as much as the students - all of whom were terrific! They also were ready at the rescue when, on the first day, I tripped over my own tripod, spilling the solvent, as the easel was slowly sliding to the floor. After that mishap, all flowed pretty smoothly... Above is a photo of the first day's demo of sunflowers, not totally completed, and below is a 5 minute apple study done on the second day. This afternoon I am going to do a small warm up painting, and then hopefully finish/resolve the large rose painting from last week.

Pear and Plum Study, 10 x 10

This weekend, I am teaching that workshop for 15, through the Art School in Sandy Springs. This is my largest group yet, because Donna Thomas, the director, has acquired a nice large gallery space which accommodates more painters! I tell students to do small studies from life each day, prior to painting larger pieces -- a Warm Up, so to speak. I did the one above today as a warm up...and I definitely needed to get back in the groove, as I spent the last 3 days cleaning and rearranging my studio. It feels like a new space, but I am needing to recharge my painting batteries before Saturday. I haven't gotten back to the large painting of the roses, but will post when I do.

Blue Bowl now missing from new painting...finished piece to come!

After two days of painting on my new large piece, I am making progress toward the goal...sometimes, I dislike the process on large paintings, because alla prima is almost out of the question, unless I am really ON. Thus, I look, rearrange, etc. Today, I eliminated the cream pitcher in which the roses actually WERE, put them in a glass jar, repainted the lower portion, in which I had a blue Chinese bowl and leaves... Yikes! Attention to composition, real attention, could avoid these missteps. I loved the way I had painted the bowl, and hated to paint it out, but as Sherrie McGraw said at a workshop I attended in Scottsdale: " It is often necessary to destroy something good to achieve something better." I now realize that I should photograph these stages and then the final result. Something in me hates to be that exposed, but it is also good to get feedback, I know. I have no current followers to my blog, but when and if I get some, I will definitely add in-progress photos!

Blogging is New to Me!

Well, I thought I should start a blog, though I'm not totally sure why...I do enjoy other painter's blogs, so I will see how this turns out! I am teaching a workshop for 15 next weekend, and I am gathering my thoughts. This will be my 4th group of painters... I taught 3 workshops last year, through the Art School in Sandy Springs, here in Atlanta, Georgia. I find that I still get nervous, especially about the demonstration, but I have a bit more confidence since I've done it, to varying degrees of success, before. I have been painting today -- and as usual, I am liking some parts of the (large - i.e. 36 x 36) painting, and wondering about other elements. I really love the winter light in my small studio, which is even more brilliant since we had a rare snow here in Atlanta on Friday night. I will post an image of the painting on my easel when I finish. I am thinking I shall post paintings, some at the finish - some in-progress -- this blog concept will evolve as I go along.
